VCS Farm to School Week 2008!

Second Annual VCS Farm 2 School Week
Sept. 15-19

VCS will be holding its second annual Farm 2 School Week Sept. 15-19, in accordance with the dates suggested by the state Dept. of Education. The highlight of our F2S week are the local, fresh foods that will be served in our cafeteria EVERY DAY of the week-long event, with Wednesday being our big Harvest Luncheon. Check the white board by the cafeteria each morning to see what is being served and the farms producing the foods. Hats off to our Food Service Staff for preparing locally grown foods for our school community.
In addition, we will be hearing Fun Farm Facts each morning during announcements, and a Farm exhibit will be displayed in our atrium again. We are very pleased to have VCS' own Emily Cates, who owns Harvest Moon Farm in China with her husband, Doug, coming to school for the day on September 18. Emily will be bringing all kinds of live poultry as well as an incredibly variety of vegetables grown on her farm to share with the students.
Celebrate local farms and food, and encourage your child to eat “hot lunch” each day next week; it's not only nutritious and delicious, but leaves a very small carbon footprint on our planet!

Fun web site from New York Zoos and Aquarium folks

BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF

It's a bit of a lazy Saturday for me and I'm sitting around watching silly cartoons and surfing the 'net. A mid-western teacher colleague of mine that I follow on Twitter shared a really cool web site with me. The folks from the New York Zoos and Aquarium have created a fun web site called BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF. Rather than spend too much time explaining it, I encourage you to click BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF and go see for yourself! Have fun!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! FUN FAIR 2008!

We are in serious danger of having to cancel the Fun Fair this year due to a shortage of Volunteers. The Fun Fair is a major fund raiser for the VCS PTO. Money raised from the Fun Fair is used to help fund the playground, field trips, and more. The decision will be made on Monday, so.....if you can help please let us know right off. Even a short amount of time like an hour would be a big help. With a tough budget year ahead of us a successful fun fair would certainly help to assure field trips and enrichment activities in our school. If you are planning to help, please contact Dorian Landry at 872-7062 or email her at dlandry3@verizon.net

Hope you can help!

Growing up Online (Parents and kids should watch this)

In Growing Up Online, FRONTLINE takes viewers inside the very
public private worlds that kids are creating online, raising important questions about how the Internet is transforming childhood. "The Internet and the digital world was something that belonged to adults, and now it's something that really is the province of teenagers....

You can watch the entire series online. Watch it with your kids...and educate yourself about the world your own kids now live in. Nothing beats parental involvement when it comes to keeping our kids safe. I encourage everyone to check this out. -Mr. Trask-

Two Ski-Snowboard trips this weekend!

Regardless of the weather on Friday...we're headed to Eaton Mountain on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. sharp! We've gotten quite a dumping of snow, they've been making snow on top of that, and the groomer is in tip-top shape! Looks like it's going to be a blast! Also, we'll be headed to Eaton on Monday as well! There's no school and we'll head up and have some more fun!

The Eaton Ski Patrol is having a BBQ fundraiser on both Sat and Sunday. Lets support them if you can. They always do a great job, and we have used them a few times over the last 5-6 years. They're looking to raise some money for a defibrillator and a few other pieces of vital equipment.

See you all on the slopes this weekend!
